US Navy Reserve VR Squadrons Update

Post by Navairboss »

Albert and all,

I have been working on updating the US Naval Reserve Squadron Aircraft in the db. I wish I had a nickel for every hour I flew in these aircraft when I was in the Navy. Spent many an hour flying these birds. In looking through the db it is in need of a makeover so below is about two weeks of research and many hours of monitoring. Hope this helps Albert. If anyone has any updates please contact me via email n5fpw at brmemc.net.

Here are the current aircraft assignments for VR-1 based at Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility, MD [KADW]
C-20D 163691
C-20D 163692
C-37B 166376
C-37B 166377
C-37B 166378
C-37B 166379

And the two VR-1 CFLSW assigned detachment aircraft
C-20A 830500 VR-1/ETD-Sigonella CFLSW Det NAS Sigonella (Sicily), Italy [KNSY] This is the CINCUSNEUR VIP aircraft and has had a famous call sign for years Catbird 1 (assigned to the position)
C-37A 166375 VR-1/ETD-PAC CFLSW Det Hickam AFB, HI [PHIK]

The Capital Skyliners of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) VR-48 was disestablish on 7 September 2012. Consequently their C-20G aircraft have been reassigned.
C-20G 165151 1199 VR-48 USN Andrews AFB MD 6.12
C-20G 165093 1187 VR-48 USN Andrews AFB MD 3.13
C-20G 165153 1200 VR-48 USMC Andrews AFB MD 7.12

All the aircraft above have been seen with VVRG### in the Mode-S c/s block intercept. That would indicate they are now with VR-51 based at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI [PHNG]

The aircraft below have also been seen using the RG### Mode-S c/s
C-20G 165094 1189 VR-51 USN MCAS Kaneohe Bay HI 3.12
C-20G 165152 1201 VR-51 USN MCAS Kaneohe Bay HI 3.13

Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) VR-52 "Taskmasters" was disestablish on 9 September 2012. Here is the status of their previously assigned aircraft.

C-9B 160048 47681 309th AMARG Stored 05jun12 ex 048/VR-52
C-9B 160049 47698 309th AMARG Stored 16nov11 ex 049/VR-56 which has transitioned to C-40s more later)
C-9B 160050 47699 Now assigned to VR-61 NAS Whidbey Island, WA [KNUW] based on RS Mode-S c/s block intercept
C-9B 160051 47700 Now assigned to VR-61 NAS Whidbey Island, WA [KNUW] based on RS Mode-S c/s block intercept

As I mentioned above VR-56 has transitioned to the C-40A aircraft (see excerpt of Navy story below) so :-

159118 118 C-9B 47585 309th AMARG Stored 26jun12 ex 118/VR-56

NAVAL AIR STATION OCEANA, Va. (NNS) -- Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 56, the "Globemasters" of Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Va., gained their first C-40A Clipper transport aircraft in a transfer from the "Conquistadors" of VR-57, based in NAS North Island, Calif., March 2, 2012. The C-40A is a military derivative of the 737-700 commercial airliner with a main-deck cargo door that was modified at Boeing's Wichita facility for troop and cargo transport missions. Since the first delivery to the Navy in April 2001, the C-40A continues to be phased in to replace the Navy's aging fleet of C-9B Skytrains. VR-56's last C-9B was retired in December 2011. The Navy originally took delivery of aircraft 166696 from Boeing Commercial Airplane's Global Transport and Executive Systems in Wichita, Kan., Oct. 21, 2011, and was initially put into service with VR-57.

On the Live-Mode-S Military website
In the results list for a search of 165835 the operator block at the top of the page (white space) it is blank The blue section intercept list is correct USNR | VR-57 [KNZY]
In the results list for a search of 165836 the operator block at the top of the page (white space) it is blank The blue section intercept list is correct USNR | VR-57 [KNZY]

C-40A 166694 Now assigned to VR-56 NAS NAS Oceana, VA [KNTU] based on Mode-S analysis and field reports.

So here is the current lineup of US Navy C-40 Clipper assignments
VR-56 NAS Oceana, VA [KNTU] (RY) 166694, 166695 and 166696
VR-57 NAS North Island, CA [KNZY] (RX) 165835, 165836 and 166693
VR-58 NAS Jacksonville, FL [KNIP] (JV) 165829, 165832 and 165834
VR-59 NAS Fort Worth JRB, TX [KNFW] (RY) 165830, 165831 and 165833

And to finish out the old Navy C-9B Skytrain aircraft status
159113 C-9B 47577 Withdrawn from use ex 113/VR-61 01nov11
159114 C-9B 47584 309th AMARG Stored 15may12 ex 114/VR-61 So who was flying ADFEE3 seen 5/9/13 on the Greenford, GB box?

Just to add that 166379 C-37B was never taken up by the USN so still maybe a reserve reg on the register awaiting for a possible additional procurement of another Gulfstream5/550.

Morning Jason and all,

Hope all is well with all! Jason, I believe that 166379 is maybe flying.

On the NYCAviation Forum > Daily LGA Report 2009 (7 Nov 2009) LGA777 reported the following:

Over a 3 hour period today 3 unmarked militay versions of the G-V departed.
2 Where US Navy C-37B's 166378 and 166379 and the middle one was
a USAF C-37A 01-0029. Found it a little odd that all left in a 3 hour period.

if the Mode-S ICAO24 address is to be believed AE152D, then it is real and flying in Europe. Unfortunately we lost a lot of material in the last few LMode-S server dumps so I can't fully recreate all the records and notes for a more complete vetting. But if the visual spotters are to be believed 166379 appears to be a real airframe in service. The only thing that remains to convince me it is a real airframe in service is that one of the av photogs get a picture of it. I don't see one of those online yet.

So there is a strong case that it is flying but I still would like to see a pic. ;-)

Thanks for the input as always

Hi Larry

Thanks for the update as you say I wont be convinced myself until I see a picture I follow Biz Jets as well and have not come across a G5/G550 being re reg to the USN of late but it would be nice if this is infact the case.
